Water Truck

A water truck carries a baffled water tank with pump-fed spray heads for dust control, soil compaction, and general site water supply. Spray patterns are controlled from the cab, covering haul roads and work areas in passes. Cataloged tanks band from under 2,000 to over 4,000 gal on chassis rated 114 to 335 hp.

Fonctionnement

A pump driven off the chassis or an auxiliary engine feeds front, side, and rear spray heads, each switchable from the cab to shape the watering pattern. A rear-mounted hose connection serves filling, washdown, and hand-watering duties. Internal baffles limit surge—critical because thousands of gallons shifting mid-turn will move the truck. Fill points draw from hydrants, standpipes, or open sources with appropriate backflow protection. Coverage per load depends on tank volume, spray rate, and route length; larger tanks trade maneuverability for fewer refills.

Types et variantes

On-road water trucks
Street-legal chassis for site and municipal duty.
Off-road water wagons
Articulated or rigid off-road chassis for mine and mass-grading dust control.
Spray-bar compaction units
Metered spray bars deliver uniform moisture for soil compaction lifts.

Comment l'industrie le dimensionne

Water trucks are sized by daily water demand against refill logistics: the 0-2,000 gal band suits dust control on small sites or water for one compaction crew; the 2,000-4,000 gal band is the standard site water truck for dust control and compaction water for a full crew; 4,000+ gal units serve large-site and haul-road watering with fewer refill trips on big earthwork. Water weight governs chassis class—4,000+ gal is over 33,000 lb of water alone—which in turn sets licensing requirements.

Applications

  • Dust suppression on haul roads and active work zones
  • Moisture conditioning for soil compaction
  • Site cleanup and equipment washdown
  • Standby water for fire watch on hot-work sites
  • Hydroseeding and landscaping water supply

Sécurité et opération

  • Drive to the surge: partial tanks shift weight through turns and braking even with baffles.
  • Spray to control dust without flooding haul roads; over-watering creates skid hazards for haul traffic.
  • Use backflow prevention when filling from potable systems.
  • Verify overhead clearance at fill standpipes and around site power lines.

Normes et certifications

FMCSA · 49 CFR 383
CDL with tank endorsement applies to larger on-road units over 26,000 lb GVWR carrying liquid loads.
EPA / state air agencies · Fugitive dust rules
Dust-control watering is the standard compliance measure under construction air-quality permits.
FMCSA · 49 CFR 396
Inspection and maintenance requirements for commercial vehicles operating on public roads.

Questions fréquentes

What size water truck fits a typical grading job?
Cataloged bands run 0-2,000, 2,000-4,000, and 4,000+ gal. Route length between refills is the deciding factor: short internal haul roads run fine on the 0-2,000 gal band, while long routes justify the 4,000+ gal band.
Does a water truck require a CDL?
Larger units exceed 26,000 lb GVWR loaded—water alone weighs 8.34 lb per gallon—and on public roads they require a CDL, with a tank endorsement for the liquid load.
Why are tanks baffled?
To break up surge. Without baffles, tons of water slosh forward under braking and sideways in turns, enough to push the truck past its handling limits.
