Air Chipping Hammer

An air chipping hammer is a hand-held pneumatic percussion tool that delivers rapid, repeated blows through a chisel or bit. It sits at the light end of the percussion-tool spectrum, built for controlled material removal — weld slag, rust, scale, mortar and light concrete — rather than bulk demolition. It runs from a compressed-air supply and trades raw power for precision and low weight.

How it works

Compressed air drives a piston back and forth inside the tool's barrel; each forward stroke strikes the rear of the chisel shank, transferring an impact into the work. A trigger valve meters air to control the action, and a retainer holds the chisel in the nose of the tool. Blow energy is small and blow rate high compared with breakers, which is what gives the chipping hammer its control on detail work. The tool itself is only half the system: a compressor must sustain the tool's rated air draw at working pressure, and the hose and couplers must match the tool's inlet. Chisel selection — flat, pointed, gouge or specialty profiles — does as much to match the tool to the task as the tool itself.

Types & variants

Light chipping hammers
The smallest units, for weld slag, spatter and scale removal where control matters more than blow energy.
Standard chipping hammers
General-purpose units for mortar, tile, light concrete chipping and surface preparation.
Heavy chipping hammers
The top of the class, approaching light demolition tools, for sustained concrete and masonry chipping.
Specialty scaling and needle-type tools
Variants optimized for rust and coating removal on steel, often grouped with chipping hammers in equipment fleets.

Key specifications

SpecificationTypical rangeWhat it means
Blow rate (bpm)Varies by model; not published across listed unitsFaster, lighter blows suit scaling and cleanup; slower, harder blows suit chipping masonry and concrete.
Chisel shank typeRound or hex shank patterns; varies by modelThe shank pattern determines which chisels and bits the tool accepts; shank and retainer must match.
Air supply requirementCompressed-air feed; rated draw varies by modelThe compressor must sustain the tool's rated cfm at working pressure or impact energy drops off under load.

How the industry sizes it

Percussion tools are classed by tool weight in pounds, and chipping hammers occupy the light end of that spectrum — below rivet busters and far below paving breakers. Within the class, lighter tools suit overhead and extended detail work where fatigue governs, while heavier tools carry more blow energy for masonry and concrete. Since listed models in this class do not publish weight or blow-energy figures, matching is done against the specific model's data sheet and the chisel profile fitted.

Applications

  • Removing weld slag and spatter from fabricated steel
  • Stripping rust and scale ahead of coating work
  • Breaking out mortar, tile and render
  • Light concrete chipping and surface preparation
  • Freeing rusted or seized components
  • Deburring and dressing castings

Safety & operation

  • Prolonged use exposes the hands and arms to vibration; work is rotated and rest cycles observed to manage hand-arm vibration risk.
  • Chipping concrete or masonry generates respirable crystalline silica; dust controls or respiratory protection apply under the OSHA silica rule.
  • Flying chips make sealed eye protection and face shields mandatory for the operator and exposed bystanders.
  • The chisel retainer is checked before each use; an unretained chisel becomes a projectile under air.
  • Hose couplings carry whip restraints and the line is depressurized before changing chisels.

Standards & certifications

OSHA · 29 CFR 1926.302(b)
Pneumatic tool requirements including securing tools to hoses and safe hose handling.
OSHA · 29 CFR 1926.1153
Respirable crystalline silica rule governing dust controls when chipping concrete or masonry.
ANSI · ANSI B186.1
Safety code for portable air tools, covering design and safe-use provisions for percussion tools.
ISO · ISO 28927 series
Standardized measurement of hand-transmitted vibration for hand-held power tools, used to compare vibration exposure.

Frequently asked

What separates a chipping hammer from a breaker?
Weight class and blow energy. Chipping hammers are light hand tools built for controlled removal of slag, scale, mortar and thin concrete; breakers are heavy percussion tools for bulk demolition.
Does a chipping hammer need its own compressor?
Yes — it is an air tool with no onboard power. The compressor must sustain the tool's rated cfm at working pressure for the tool to hold its impact energy.
Which chisels fit a given chipping hammer?
Chisel fit follows the shank pattern — round or hex — and the retainer style on the specific model, so shank, retainer and profile are confirmed against the tool's data sheet.
Is silica dust a concern with these tools?
Yes, whenever the work is concrete, masonry or mortar. The OSHA silica rule requires dust suppression or respiratory protection for that work.
