How it works

The transmitter couples a frequency onto the target — by direct connection, clamp, or induction — and the receiver reads the resulting field above ground, showing line and estimated depth. Non-metallic lines take an inserted sonde or tracer wire; passive modes sweep for energized and metallic services without a connection.

How to choose

Frequency range and coupling options define capability: direct connection at low frequency gives the cleanest trace on long runs, higher frequencies jump to congested and poorly grounded lines at the cost of bleed-over. Locating supplements — never replaces — the 811 one-call process, and depth readings are estimates until potholed.

Does private locating replace the 811 call?
No — one-call marks the utilities' own lines; private locators find what one-call does not cover: site-owned services, abandoned lines, and anything beyond the meter. Diligence uses both.
Can locators find plastic pipe?
Not directly — plastic carries no signal. A sonde pushed through the line, tracer wire installed with it, or acoustic methods stand in where metal is absent.
How reliable are depth readings?
Treated as estimates — distorted by adjacent utilities and signal bleed. Verification is by vacuum or hand exposure before mechanical digging near the mark, per damage-prevention practice.
