Compact Tractor
A compact tractor is a small diesel tractor built around the same three-point hitch, PTO and loader architecture as full-size agricultural machines, scaled for properties, landscaping and light construction duty. It is the default machine for mowing, loader work and implement tasks below the size where utility tractors take over.

Cómo funciona
A small diesel engine drives the wheels through a hydrostatic or gear transmission, almost always with selectable four-wheel drive. The rear three-point hitch lifts and carries mounted implements — catalog lift records run 310–1,300 kg — while the rear PTO powers mowers, tillers and blowers at standardized speeds, and mid-PTOs on smaller units drive belly mowers. A front-end loader is the class's second identity: quick-attach loaders with catalog-recorded load capacities up to 3,852 kg turn the tractor into a compact material handler. Backhoe subframes, pallet forks and hydraulic remotes extend the machine into light construction work.
Tipos y variantes
- Subcompact tractors
- Up to 25 hp — mowing, light loader work and box blade tasks on acreages and parks.
- Compact tractors
- The 25–45 hp core for loader, backhoe, auger and rotary cutter work on landscape and municipal crews.
- Large-frame compacts
- 45+ hp — full three-point implements and real loader capacity without stepping up to a full-size tractor.
- Tractor-loader-backhoe (TLB) packages
- Factory loader and backhoe combinations for light construction.
Especificaciones clave
| Especificación | Rango típico | Qué significa |
|---|---|---|
| Engine power | 16.6–425.0 hp | Catalog range spans subcompact through utility tractors; class is sized by horsepower. |
| Operating weight | 1,334–23,149 lb (605–10,500 kg) | From catalog records, spanning subcompact through the heaviest machines carried in the class. |
| Three-point lift capacity | 683–2,866 lb (310–1,300 kg) | Catalog hitch records — determines which mounted implements the tractor carries. |
| Load capacity | 441–8,492 lb (200–3,852 kg) | Catalog loader load-capacity records across the class's configurations. |
| Fuel tank capacity | 6.6–51.0 L | Catalog range across subcompact through utility-class fuel systems. |
Cómo la industria lo dimensiona
Compact tractors are sized by engine horsepower. The class divides into up to 25 hp (subcompact — mowing and light loader work), 25–45 hp (the everyday compact for loader, backhoe and implements), and 45+ hp (the biggest compacts with full three-point capacity). Hitch capacity, loader class and weight scale in step. The heaviest implement's demand — lift weight, PTO draw — is the practical sizing test.
Aplicaciones
- Mowing and grounds maintenance with mid- and rear-mount implements
- Loader work: soil, mulch, gravel and pallet handling
- Grading and driveway maintenance with box blades and rear blades
- Post-hole digging, tilling and landscape implement work off the PTO
- Snow removal with blowers, blades and loaders
- Light construction support and towing on job sites
Seguridad y operación
- Rollover protection saves lives only deployed: keep the ROPS bar up and the belt on except where the manual explicitly directs folding.
- Respect slopes — compact tractors with loaders raised or implements attached tip at modest angles, and mowing slopes is the class's recurring incident.
- Keep the loader low in travel and ballast the rear per the loader chart.
- Shield and respect the PTO shaft; entanglement hazards are identical to full-size tractors.
- Hitch pulled loads at the drawbar only, never above it.
