Centrifugal designs (trash, clear-water, submersible) fling water outward through an impeller — trash models with open impellers and inspection ports that let solids pass. Diaphragm pumps instead pulse a flexible membrane, moving thick, abrasive mixtures at low flow and tolerating dry running that would destroy a centrifugal seal.

The liquid picks the pump: clean transfer to standard centrifugal, muddy excavation water to trash pumps sized by solids rating, mucky seepage to a diaphragm, and confined sumps to submersibles that need no suction lift. Flow (gpm) and total head — lift plus friction — size the unit; suction lift beyond about 25 ft is a physical wall no surface pump crosses.

What makes a pump a 'trash' pump?
Solids passage. Open impellers and wide volutes pass stones and debris up to a rated diameter — commonly 2-3 in — with cleanout ports for the exceptions. Standard centrifugal pumps clog and wear on the same water.
When is a diaphragm pump the right choice?
Slow, thick, and intermittent: mucky seepage, sludge, and slurries at modest flow. It runs dry without damage and keeps prime — the overnight dewatering standby for shallow excavations.
Why does suction lift limit surface pumps?
Atmospheric pressure only pushes water about 25 ft up a suction hose at sea level — less with heat and altitude. Deeper sources call for a submersible or a vacuum-assisted unit at the surface.
