Fonctionnement

A laser level spins or fans a beam into a level (or graded) plane; detectors on rods read it at distance, replacing string lines and water levels. Total stations measure horizontal and vertical angles plus distance to a prism, placing points from coordinates. Chalk lines and squares remain the fastest tools inside a room.

Tolerance and range decide the instrument: interior finish work runs on line lasers; sitework grading on rotary lasers with machine or rod detectors; anchor-bolt and column layout on a total station. What is the difference between a laser level and a total station?
Dimension. A laser level projects a plane — one elevation everywhere. A total station measures and sets individual points in three dimensions from coordinates, which layout of columns, anchor bolts, and property lines requires.
How does a rotary laser support grading?
A detector on a rod (or machine mast) reads the rotating beam at any distance, showing cut and fill against the reference plane — one instrument serves the whole site without re-setup.
Are optical levels still relevant?
Yes — a builder's level and rod remain a durable, battery-free way to transfer elevations, check formwork, and verify laser setups.
