Articulating Boom Lift

An articulating boom lift is a mobile elevating work platform whose boom is built from multiple hinged sections that fold and extend, letting the platform travel up and over obstacles to reach work points a straight boom cannot. It is the construction and maintenance industries' machine of choice where both height and around-obstruction positioning are required.

Cat classes

Pick a size class — capacity and reach differ across the range.

How it works

Hydraulic cylinders raise the riser section, articulate the mid-boom knuckles, and extend telescoping sections, while a turntable slews the entire boom through a full circle on the chassis. A jib at the platform end adds fine vertical articulation, and platform rotate lets the operator square the basket to the work. Load-sensing and envelope-control systems monitor moment continuously and limit motion before a tipping condition can develop. The operator drives and positions the machine from platform controls; ground controls provide override and rescue functions. Counterweight and chassis width give the machine its stability, so most models operate without outriggers and can reposition at height where rated. Power is diesel on large rough-terrain models and battery-electric or hybrid on narrow units for indoor and urban work.

Types & variants

Engine-powered rough terrain articulating booms
4WD diesel units with oscillating axles for outdoor sites, dominating the 60-80 ft and taller bands.
Electric articulating booms
Battery-powered, narrow-chassis machines with non-marking tires for indoor and slab work, concentrated in the up to 40 ft and 40-60 ft bands.
Hybrid articulating booms
Dual-power units pairing a small engine with battery drive, able to work emission-free indoors and travel outdoors.
Jib-equipped configurations
Models with an articulating jib and platform rotate for fine positioning around steel, pipework, and facades.
Super-size articulating booms
Machines in the 100-135 ft and 135+ ft bands with multi-section risers for stadiums, plants, and high-rise exteriors.

Key specifications

SpecificationTypical rangeWhat it means
Working height11.8–159.8 ft across listed modelsThe primary sizing spec; articulating geometry trades some maximum height for the ability to reach around obstructions.
Horizontal outreach / max reach2.8–24.4 m (9.2–80.1 ft) maximum horizontal reachHow far the platform can extend from the turntable center — the spec that determines whether the machine can clear an obstacle and still reach the work.
Platform capacity136–454 kg (300–1,000 lb)Covers the workers, tools, and material in the basket; capacity may reduce at maximum outreach on dual-rated machines.
Operating weight993–26,039 kg (2,189–57,408 lb)Rises steeply with height and outreach because counterweight provides the stability; drives transport class and ground-bearing checks.
Gradeability20–50%Maximum stowed travel slope. Elevation requires the chassis within the manufacturer's level tolerance.

How the industry sizes it

Articulating booms are sized by working height in bands — up to 40 ft, 40-60 ft, 60-80 ft, 80-100 ft, 100-135 ft, and 135+ ft — but selection hinges equally on the reach envelope: the combination of up-and-over clearance and horizontal outreach at the required height, read from the manufacturer's range diagram. Power source and chassis width then split the class between narrow electric units for indoor work and 4WD diesel machines for open sites. In MEWP classification these are Group B machines (platform can extend beyond the tipping line), Type 3.

Applications

  • Exterior maintenance and construction on buildings with setbacks, overhangs, and rooftop equipment
  • Steel erection, bolting, and welding where the platform must reach around structure
  • Mechanical and electrical work above pipe racks, tanks, and process equipment
  • Stadium, arena, and high-bay facility lighting and services
  • Bridge and infrastructure inspection and repair requiring up-and-over positioning
  • Tree care and utility work near structures and energized lines

Safety & operation

  • Boom-supported platforms require every occupant to wear personal fall protection attached to a designated platform anchor — the machine can catapult occupants during envelope motion or impact.
  • Operators need MEWP operator training plus model familiarization per ANSI A92.24; boom-specific hazards such as envelope control and platform rescue are part of familiarization.
  • Minimum approach distances to energized power lines must be maintained; articulating booms are frequently used near services and electrocution is a leading MEWP fatality cause.
  • Crush hazard management is critical when maneuvering under structure — sustained-involuntary-operation guarding and secondary protection devices must be functional.
  • Wind limits, ground bearing under each wheel, and tilt interlocks govern outdoor elevated work; counterweight machines depend entirely on level, competent ground.

Frequently asked

When is an articulating boom the right choice over a telescopic boom?
When the work point sits behind an obstruction — a parapet, pipe rack, tree line, or machine — that a straight boom cannot clear from available ground. If the path to the work is a straight line and maximum outreach matters most, a telescopic boom is usually more efficient.
Is a harness required on an articulating boom lift?
Yes. Occupants of boom-supported platforms must wear a full-body harness with a lanyard attached to the platform's designated anchor point in the U.S. and Canada. Guardrails alone are not sufficient on booms.
How high do articulating boom lifts reach?
The class spans working heights from 11.8 ft to 159.8 ft, with catalog size bands from up to 40 ft through 135+ ft. Horizontal outreach across listed models runs from 2.8 m to 24.4 m (9.2 ft to 80.1 ft).
Can articulating booms work indoors?
Electric and hybrid narrow-chassis models are built for indoor use, with non-marking tires and zero-emission operation. Floor capacity must be verified — even compact booms concentrate significant weight through small tire contact patches.
